White 2 piece gift boxes

We’ve all seen it on tv or in a movie…

…someone gets a beautifully wrapped present but instead of them ripping off all the gift wrap, they just remove the perfectly wrapped lid!

It’s done like that to make it quick and easy for the actors but it sure looks pretty cool!!

Ever wondered how do they cover a gift box lid like that??

Believe me, it’s super simple if you just follow our step by step instructions. This is also a great way to reuse gift boxes as decorative storage boxes.

Steps to cover a gift box lid-

Cover a gift box lid

Start with a gift box with a removable lid. This box measures 9″ x 9″ x 4 1/2″ but you can use any size you’d like. We used a white box to match our sheet of marble patterned tissue paper. You’ll also need a can of spray glue/adhesive (we got this one at Michaels).

Next, spray a fine mist of spray glue onto the lid (follow directions on the spray can). Make sure you’ve covered your work space with paper since the spray does spray!

Then, take your sheet of tissue paper and gently place it on the lid, starting at one end. Use your hand or a soft cloth to smooth the tissue across the lid removing any creases.

Now, stand your gift box lid on one of the sides, like in the photo above. Give this part of the lid a light spray. Smooth the tissue paper across the lid removing any creases.

Repeat the above step to the opposite side of the lid, as shown in the above photo. You  now have 2 opposite sides that are glued down and 2 sides that aren’t.

Now, repeat the above step for the 2 remaining sides that still need to be glued down. All 4 sides of your lid should now be glued down.

Next, fold the tissue paper “points” to form your corners, as in the above photo. Give a light spray to glue down the corner. Flip your gift box lid to the opposite side and repeat the same step. You now should have 2 opposite sides with folded in corners and 2 opposite sides that are smooth without corners.

Use your scissors to make cuts in all 4 corners. Only cut just below the box.

Your lid should now look like the one in the above photo.

Give all 4 sides of the tissue paper a trim so they’re about the same width.

Gently spray the tissue paper and smooth it inside the lid.

Hint: It’s better to spray the tissue paper and not the inside of the lid. The tissue won’t be covering the entire inside of the lid so you’ll end up with a sticky inside!
